Broccoli is Good for You!

Ok everyone.

I'm not sure if KI meant for anyone to find out about this, but I found the best snack in the game that will help you're pet by an INCREDIBLE amount when trying to get certain talents.

So, feed your pet whatever you like until it has a small amount of experience left to level up. Once you've done that, you'll want to select a Broccoli snack, (any type will do) then feed.

For this particular pet, I was aiming to get Spell Proof so I told the pet to get Spell Proof and as a reward, you will get a Cubby Broccoli.

There's only one answer to something like that...

And there you have it! A simple, maybe not true, not 100% working way to get the talents you want!

I am considerably stoked with this pet and wish you all good luck on your pet training.

Thanks!

Blaze's Tips & Tricks No. 8 An efficient Guide to the Cannon Game!

After doing a lot of pet training lately, I've been trying all the games out again.

I have a tip that I believe will come in very handy to those wishing to do the cannon game well, and quickly.

What you need to do, is put the power meter up to full and aim really low. This means that you don't have to worry too much about how the wind is going to affect your shot.

Use the practise shot to your advantage to judge the height of the cannon and with a little bit of practise you'll get much better.

This is how a typical shot of mine would look, max power, low aim and then worrying about the wind with the direction of cannon.

And again...

Until you've finished the round. If you do well, then you should average 3 - 4 points a round.

Hopefully this tip has helped you and good luck on your future pet training endeavours.

Thanks for reading!

Grub Guardian: The Helephant Tower

Here we are with another Grub Guardian post...

The Helephant Tower is a Wysteria map (costs crowns to buy, I HIGHLY suggest spending crowns on Wysteria maps). Wysteria maps are definitely worth the couple hundred crowns needed as you will win so many crowns items as rewards that easily make up what you spent.

Anyway, I completed this map using star towers. Yes yes, I know, more crowns items... But seriously. This level is so insanely hard to get a gold medal on that I couldn't get it after going at it for around an hour. I can finish it, just not perfectly.

Here is the video.

Ok, basic strategy is just centralising the Epic fire pet and letting the star towers do the work. They are seriously overpowered. Anyway, you need to put down the Ice towers for those Helephants near the start as they are pretty quick but move ridiculously slowly with ice slow.

Hope you enjoyed and I will have more Grub Guardian posts out soon.

See you next time!

Pet Training! (Good news for once!)

After many, many, many hatches and lots of hatch setting up on Wizard101Central I have managed to get very close to "one of" my  Perfect Pets.

This will be my PvP/hitting hard pet. For it, I want the 5 following abilities.

1. Fairy Friend, one of my 'must have' talents for most pets ('May Cast Fairy')
2. Death-Dealer, yes I am making a school specific pet for my Death (main) wizard (adds 9% Death Damage)
3. Spell-Proof, another must' have' talent for me (gives 10% Universal Resistance)
4. Pain-Giver, my first ever pet to have pain giver, a great talent for multi-school and specific schools (6% Universal Damage)
5. Spell-Defying, similar to Spell-Proof but a little less resist (5% Universal Resistance)

This is what I have so far...

Amazing! Right? 4 out of 5 of the talents I wanted. I'm not training to Mega yet (it has Pain in the pool), but instead hatching this pet with others.

I hope my luck stays with me as I train my other pets. Thanks goodness for Couch Potatoes and DHEs!

Also (something we haven't done before), if you would like to hatch with this pet, please post a time in the comments and the name of your wizard so that we can meet up. Make sure you have at least 50, 000 gold just in case before you come so that you afford the hatch. I will wait 15 mins after the time you posted and if you do not show up, I will move on. Feel free to repost.

Don't forget that I can only hatch once every 12 hours (so I can't hatch one after another (unless your willing to gift a potion)) and only have Menu Chat.

See you next time!

My first Mega Pet!

Hey everyone,

As you know I have been training a new pet called Patch. This one was another Morgrim hatch, but with a Penumbra Drake. I used my best Ianthine Hound, Winston for this hatch. Now the reason I chose a Penumbra Drake is that they are 'Ace Avengers' - otherwise known as 'May Cast Vengeance'. I decided to try for this talent, as my critical hit was still lacking a bit.

Training started and luckily I had around 48 mega snacks to use. The first talent revealed for Patch was Curse Giver. This is not really want I wanted, but I carried on regardless. The pedigree of the two pets was good.... so this pet must have picked up at least a couple of good stats, surely?

Each Talent reveal after Teen was good, and I continued to train. Today was the day that Patch got to Mega status. Actually this is the first time I have trained a pet to Mega - I was chasing Fairy Friend. My garden is non-existent because I have chosen to train and I need energy.
Anyway the results are in - Fairy Friend, so once again I am doing the Happy Dance!

So in Order the Talents revealed are:

  • Teen - Curse Giver
  • Adult - MC Vengeance
  • Ancient - MC Unicorn
  • Epic - MC Spritely
  • Mega - MC Fairy

Now curse giver is the only  talent that I don't want, and the stats for Patch aren't quite perfect either. As you can see Intellect and Will are not at maximum level. I am thinking that maybe I should try another hatch with Morgrim's Penumbra Drake, but for now I am out of Mega Snacks and it's back to gardening for a while.

You know I was after a healing pet with MC Vengeance... and that is exactly what I got. Time to think about what else would be useful..... a Red Ghost card would be pretty cool.... As always I'll let you know!

Until Next Time,
Tabitha

Pet Training - The PERFECT tip

Pet training.  If you want that perfect pet, this is simply unavoidable.  It is a task that some relish and a task that others fear or simply hate!

One of the challenges for any trainer is the speed to leveling up between stages.  There are lots of blog entries here at the Keep on how to accelerate this with snacks.  You can find them by clicking here, here and in Blaze's Tips and Tricks here.

Well, that is certainly part of the equation.  The other part is the actual training itself.  Typically, die hard pet trainers will always go for the Dance Game.  It is fast and easy to get a perfect score is easy when know how.
It is funny, but I think there are two types of people that enjoy this game.  The counters, and the music lovers.  Funnily enough, I love music and thought this was the game for me.  It seems that my basic premise that this would help me master this game was wrong from the outset!

Keeping my music up, I would charge into every game listening carefully for the change in sound in order to know which note to click on, when and how many.  I would usually average 6 although sometimes I only got 5 right, and sometimes all 7, but wow, that 7th note made it so much harder.

I was discussing this with Alia one day and she told me she didn't even listen to the music, she just counted the rhythm of the arrows and formed a pattern from one to the next.  I know Alia does this with numbers, so it did make sense that she'd do it here too.  The funny thing was, she was soooo fast!

Stubborn me, I kept at my practice of listening for the music, but with constant distractions, this just became a real challenge and I found myself getting a perfect score less and less often.  So...well...I swallowed my pride and turned off my sound.

OK, I started with a couple of 6's, but they were so easy?!  I could even get them if someone started talking to me?  What is this?  There might be something in this after all!

Well, times have changed now.  I fly into the Dance Game, sound off, watching and counting those flashing arrows.  It is strange, but sometimes you aren't sure of the next one, but your fingers just know.  And before you have it, another Perfect score.  Now, I am disappointed when I don't get a 7!

Oh, one last tip.  With the 7th note, focus on remembering the last arrow.  It can sometimes help you count backwards to make sure you have it right.

And as you can see, my regular supply of Mega Snacks make this activity soooooo much quicker!

BTW- if you have any other Pet Training tips, be sure to let me know what you do.  I enjoy being able to keep learning.

Good luck with your training and...

See you 'round the Spiral!

Ancient Talent Revealed

I thought it was about time I updated you all on the hatching progress. My original Toaddle hatched with a Coldfire Dragon, giving me a new Toaddle - called Murphy. This was the first pet I trained to Epic, revealed awesome talents and Murphy has been invaluable in battles and constantly casts the MC spells.

Here are his stats. It is good that every stat is above 200, but there was definite room for improvement. The talents are awesome, but I have taken Morgrim's advice and started concentrating on the stats instead. I have hatched with Morgrim's King Pepper, Ianthine Hound a few times. Each time the stats have got better. Oh and I no longer have a Toaddle. As much as Murphy has been a great help, I actually prefer a pet to be on the ground and not floating - so the hound was suited to me!

Each time I hatched with Morgrim, I trained the pet to Adult so I could see what talents were revealed. One of them gave me talents I just wasn't interested in at all, so he has now taken up residence in one of my houses. The final time I hatched with Morgrim produced sweet stats. I trained to Adult, and decided that I would further train this pet to Ancient and see what the next talent is.

And I was not disappointed. Spritely and Fairy Friend, in addition to the Dragon Blade. Curse Giver is OK, but being death I already have plenty of these cards. As you can see the stats are near perfect.
I will be training Winston to Epic to see what the talent is, but I am happy with the progress made.

I took Winston out for a trial run at Halfang last night and he did very well. The Balance Blade is so handy and the MC spells were frequent and timely.

Just need my Couch Potatoes and Evil Magma Peas to reach elder and give me some more Mega Snacks then I'll finish his training. I'll let you know how I go!

Until Next Time,
Tabitha

The Perfect Pet - What is it Really?

One of the things we have been discussing a lot lately here at the Keep is "the Perfect Pet" - what is it and does it really exist at all?  Blaze reads a lot and has a few theories, and he and Tabitha have both been on a quest to find their perfect pet, and it has inspired me to give this some more thought again.

I have a little theory (or approach perhaps) to breeding pets, and I have been helping out both Tabitha and Blaze, working through this approach.  It seems to work pretty well.  Given that, I need to get a few more of my pets up to full stats so I can make sure the breeding program pays dividends.

As for talents, now that is harder.  What talents do you want in a pet?

With the big deal made about Critical right now, and with Block virtually abandoned for many wizards, it seems strange that it was only a matter of months ago when Resist and Block ruled as King and Queen in the Talent stakes ... well, after the classic healing SUF (Sprite, Unicorn, Fairy for those who are not avid Pet fans, usually seen as SPUDF (adding Spell-Proof and Spell-Defy to the list).

But is that really the perfect pet?

With heavy resist from Jadezillas and Ice Tanks, Incredibly Infallible was all the rage, then with Shadow Magic, the tide turned again, it is all about the damage - how high can it go?

Even Healing is no longer straightforward.  Do you want the SUF, or do you want to try your hand with Energizing Battery?  Or how about a pet that might, that can, learn mc Shift?  Do you start to sacrifice one or more Healing talents in order to getting the talents you really want?

What do you think?  What about some of the old faithful ones like Guardian Wall?  You can't deny it is pretty handy when your pet casts a Tower Shield for you...but it is all about the timing...

Let me know, let's see if we can figure out what a perfect pet really is, and then let's make one!

See you round the Spiral!

Doing the Happy Dance Right Now!!!

As you know, I hatched my Toaddle pet with a Coldfire dragon some time ago. I recently wrote about revealing abilities here. The last couple of days I have been training Baby Chester (who has been renamed to Murphy now) to Epic. The hatch has already proved itself worthwhile, so I was curious to see what other talents he would receive. So far he has 2 talents from each, plus the original Cleanse Charm card at Baby.

Last night was the big night, and boy I am one happy Wizard right now!! I just had enough Mega Pet Snacks to see me through, though a couple were level 8 snacks. Still they each gave 30 XP, and 10 Intellect - which is the only Stat not at full now, so that was a bonus!

Anyway - drumroll....... he picked up one of the original Toaddle's traits - as you can see.... Incredibly Infallible!!

This is absolutely awesome. Take a look at these Pet Stats!!

This pet is super awesome, and I will be continuing with the training to see what else he is hiding!

But for now I have to get some more Mega Snacks, so back to Gardening for a while. I may have to go over to Savarstaad Pass to farm some of the Troubled Warriors to get some more. If you want to know more about that then be sure to read Blaze's Tips and Tricks about Mega Snacks here.

Until next time,
Tabitha

Pet Training - A Simple Trick

Pet training is one of the 'dark arts' of Wizard101.  So much so there are lots of people trying to crack the formula of pet genealogy and training to reveal specific talents.  There is even the Petnome project that is an entire body of work devoted to the subject.

Those people have a lot more information about how it all works than I do, but I do have some simple tricks to share for those of you who are still new to the art of hatching.

People hatch for lots of reasons, but typically it is to give them some advantage in the Spiral or to take part in Pet Derby racing.  Me, I hatch to fight...but no matter what your reason for fighting, sooner or later you will be looking for that special pet - that particular breed that will give you 'something'.

Well, I am fire and once I saw the Coldfire Dragon, I just had to have one...and I have written a post on that part of my pet journey.  I don't know about you, but I am a little impatient at times and I like to know what I have been able to get from the hatch as soon as I can.

...and for this I have a little tip.

When you hatch two pets, you will get one of two outcomes:

  • A pet that is the same as one of the parents or
  • A hybrid pet

Hybrid pets are pretty rare (at this stage) and this means the greatest likelihood is that you will get one of the parents.

Typically, I tend to find I am hatching two pets from different schools.  If this is the case, you can easily tell which you have been able to get.  Simply select "Pets" from your backpack (or hit the letter 'i' on your keyboard) and scroll one pet to the left.  You will see a screen that looks like this:

A friend was hatching their Smith with my Coldfire.  There is no hybrid pet generated from this combination, so I knew I would have either a new Smith or Coldfire to add to my pet pen.

As you can see here, this egg already has a school.  I know the Smith is Ice and the Coldfire is Fire...can you guess what Pet this egg will hatch into?

So, it is a simple trick, but if you are as impatient as I am, it can save you the wait!

See you 'round the Spiral.

Hatching Misery?

A while back a level 90 Storm Wizard wanted to hatch with me. He thought my pet was awesome!! I was pretty surprised at the time, but I checked out his pet to see what was on offer - a ColdFire Dragon with may cast Spritely, Unicorn and Fairy!! My pet had May Cast Infallible, and a couple of other Storm attributes.

I didn't notice any of the other attributes for the ColdFire, but I really wanted some May Cast Healing spells. So off we went to hatch! This is the Toaddle pet I hatched with the Dragon. Strange thing was, when we went into the hatchery he changed his pet. It had nothing I wanted, so out I came. He then tried a different pet. Again it was not what I wanted. I told him I said yes to the ColdFire Dragon as I wanted May Cast Healing. So third time lucky... I can only assume that he didn't want to spend the extra gold to hatch with that pet as it was rather more expensive than all the others!!

After hatching the level 90 Storm Wizard was over the moon. He had gained a Toaddle pet straight away. I was disappointed. I had another Toaddle. So I left the pet in my backpack, and completely forgot about it.

Over the last couple of days my backpack needed clearing down, so I off-loaded some of pets. That's when I came across this baby Toaddle.

I remember the May Cast abilities and think that I may as well train it to ancient and see what I get. Thanks to my Couch Potato harvest I had a fair number of level 9 pet snacks, and changes to my garden also meant I have left over energy most days too.

Disappointingly, the first reveal was Storm-Proof. While this is useful (particularly as I have no Storm resistance at present, and they hit so hard!), it wasn't what I wanted. The next reveal was May Cast Unicorn - I was really happy. Looks like my little Toaddle has picked at least one of the May Casts from the ColdFire Dragon.

As you can see for yourselves, the next reveal was Fairy Friend, otherwise known as May Cast Fairy!! Woo Hoo. I am over the moon. This was better than I could have imagined!

Need to wait for a few more Couch Potatoes to get to elder to carry on through, but it is safe to say that I will be training this pet further to see what other reveals there are!!

How about you guys? Ever get disappointed with a hatch only to find that it was very handy indeed? Would love to hear your stories!

Until Next Time,
Tabitha.

Blaze's Pet Stats

I have, like Alia, been doing some recent pet training. I hatched again with Morgrim hoping to get a Penumbra Drake but failing, yet again.

I did manage to get another Coldfire Dragon with some decent stats however. My Couch Potatoes have been harvested twice since my last lot of pet training so I had around 30 or so Megas. I trained to teen and wasn't disappointed!

I kept up the Megas and maze game and again wasn't disappointed when Jackson hit adult!

If again I get something good at ancient then we may have a little renaming to do...

Until next time!

Pet Training - Part 3

Day 3 with little Lacey and we are now up to 1373 from 822.  So hopefully within the next day or so we will have her last talent.

I am now using my Golden Wheat Bread snacks, which give 40 points.

I have about 20 of them left, so that should take me through to the end of Lacey's training.  After this lot of training I'm going to have to concentrate on my Couch Potatoes again to get more mega snacks.

Cross fingers that the last talent will be worth it.
Anyway I'm off to check out the bazaar to see if there is anything new to buy.

Alia :)

Pet Training - Part 2

Ok, have used up all my energy again for today.  Just did the minimum gardening keeping my 2 Evil Magma Peas alive and well, then went to pet training.

Lacey is now at 822/2000.  I have only trained one other pet to Mega and as it's last talent it got Mana Gift. lol  Couldn't believe that I had trained it that far and got the measly talent of Mana Gift.  A huge let down.

The last time I did that I hadn't discovered couch potatoes and the mega snacks they give you so it was a very long process using snacks worth 6 or 7.  That is very different to the 50 and 45 point snacks I am using this time, although I did run out of my 50 snacks tonight and am now feeding Lacey the 45 snacks.

Until tomorrow's update
Alia :)

Pet Training

Found that my couch potatoes turned Elder today so after harvesting them, I thought it might be time to use some of my pet snacks.

Poor Lacey has been waiting for her last talent to be revealed and I have been trying to get enough good pet snacks to make the 2000 needed not seem so daunting.  She has good stats with Intellect, Agility and Power all at 250, and Strength and Will just short of the 250.

Unfortunately, I had to garden a little first but managed to get Lacey from 4/2000 to 470/2000 today and still have plenty of 50, and 45 point snacks to use.

Although most people go for the 2 shields and 3 heal type of pets being a Life wizard I find that I don't really need the heal ones as much.  So, although Pip O'Plenty and Sharp-Shot may not be what everyone likes, for me, at the moment, it works.

Ok, so Pip O'Plenty helps with my power pip chance getting it to 96%.  Why do I want it that high?  For a life wizard needing 8 pips for a Forest Lord I want to be able to start a fight with 2 power pips, blade up in round one, blade up in round two then hit with Forest Lord.  Great for a quick fight.  It also helps when I want to heal me or someone else.  A fairy for one power pip heals for 683 or 1366 when criticalled - pretty useful for one pip.  I really don't want to get the noob pips.

Life wizards have accuracy of 90%, add another 6% from my pet (Sharp-Shot) and 1% for my boots and it makes my spells a lot more reliable.  Going into a fight and knowing that fizzling will either not happen or will be a one off is something that I have grown very used to :)

Now the only surprise is what the final talent reveal is.  Energy seems to come back so slowly sometimes lol

Will keep you updated and have my fingers crossed for her last talent.

Alia :)

Ancient! Pet Training

Hey everyone, Blaze here and I have recently been hatching a bit with Morgrim. I always wanted a Penumbra Drake because of the awesome spell at Epic/Mega but by hatching with Morgrim's Coldfire Dragon I now have something new.

The first Coldfire that I got had pretty good stats and learned Unicorn at teen and Fairy Friend at adult. It was off to a pretty good start but I didn't want to train it further in case of getting something bad. I hatched again and by adult the two pets had exactly the same talents. I chose the one with the highest stats and this is what I got.

YES!! Finally a pet with Fairy and Spell Proof. This was definitely going well and now it is time to train my other Coldfire. Once I get awesome talents I can hatch with a Penumbra to try and get one. I hope it my pet training keeps going well (those Couch Potatoes are working overtime) because I'm starting to get low on Mega Snacks!

Good Luck with your pet training!

Until next time!

Epic!

Hey everyone, Blaze here!

Recently I have been pet training ( thanks to the wonderful Couch Potatoes ) with lots of Mega's to get my new Penumbra Drake to Epic. First, Spritely, I was very happy with this and decided it was worth more training, I got him to Ancient and Unicorn was the one. A pretty good pet so far! Decided to keep going and got MC Vengeance ( to get this pet I hatched with Morgrim and the pet was getting the same as his ). This pet was getting great. For the perfect pet all I needed was Spell Proof and Fairy Friend and maybe Spell Defying instead of Unicorn. I got Midnight to Epic today and guess what....
Curse Giver.

It's a little bit sad really. Well this pet won't be getting what I want so no point training it further. I'll keep everyone updated on what talents I get training my pets and what stats they were at when they levelled.

Until next time!

More on the humble Couch Potato

Blaze - you are 100% right mate.  In the Wizard101 world, these things are GOLD.  I have been growing my garden of 18 CPs now for a while and really do have Mega-Snacks-a-Plenty.  At last count I had more an 100 Fancy Yoghurt, amongst other things.  This really makes all the difference when pet training.

These little guys are dropped by a huge number of bad guys, but I know I got most of mine from the Troubled Warriors.  They don't drop that often, but go in with a small team and you'll get one every 20 or so fights.  It might seem like a lot, but it goes pretty quickly - and the rewards a worth it.

You can also get them from the Wyvern's Hoard and Hoard of the Hydra packs, so that gives you even more reason to buy these two very useful packs.

For the money, and the effort, they are also quick to grow.  With the right likes, you can get your Mega-Snacks in only a few days.

As Tabitha indicated below, these seeds give good money, good experience and good drops.  At Elder they drop another Couch Potato seed in a nice 1-for-1 ratio.

Are they the perfect seed for a well-planned garden?

If they were in a medium plot, I'd have to say that yes, they are.  The only problem with the Couch Potato is that it needs a large plot, and that means that you are limited in how many you can grow.  With a normal large garden, using the largest spells, the best you can hope for is a garden of about seven.  If they came in the medium plot variety, then being able to grow 16 at a time would be the only thing missing to make  them perfect.

If you are thinking of serious pet training, or levelling up your gardening skills, why not pay a visit to Savarstaad Pass in Grizzleheim?

See you 'round the Spiral.

Energy ... it comes all too slowly and it goes all too fast

Energy is the thing that you never really notice until you start to look at Pets or Gardening seriously.  KI are kind in allowing each Wizard to have just that little bit more every time they level up...but the process is frustrating as there never seems to be quite enough to keep that garden going strongly, or to get your pet to that next level.

So, what can you do about it?

There are a few traps and tricks that I'll go through in this post, and when I have a little more time, I'll go into this a little further.

As a member, energy comes back a little quicker.  If you aren't a member, then you are stuck to a very slow renewal and that means every drop of energy counts.

A few Traps to watch out for:

Trap 1 - Don't think that making another Wizard and passing your pet to them will let you level it up more quickly. This little bit of lateral thinking first was raised in our team by Blaze, but the reality is very different.  Once that pet goes into your Shared Bank, you will lose ALL of your energy when you try to remove it.  Not only is there no energy to improve your pet, but that Wizard now also needs to have their energy renewed!

Trap 2 - Gardening as soon as you get a 'need' on your plant is a real Energy killer.  Your plants will keep growing for a while, even with needs. It is only if you leave them too long that you will get the "Progress to Dead" message.  Once you see this, you need to clear all needs to allow the plant to grow again.

Trap 3 - Don't clear pests until harvest time.  I have not found any seed that deteriorates with pests.  Using your before harvest time is just a waste, but you will need to clear that pest when it is time to harvest.

And a few Tricks to try:

Trick 1 - Every time you level up your character, you get your energy refilled, so make sure you use all of your energy just before you level up.  Once you level up, you energy is refilled - It's like getting a free Energy Elixir!

Trick 2 - Don't spend your Energy until you have all (or close to all) of the needs on your plants, and (normally) once every 24 hours is enough.

Trick 3 - Keep similar plants together.  Plants with the same needs can be all serviced at the same time.  Check the needs for your seeds at Wizard101Central and it will save you a lot of Energy.

This is one of my Fiery Boom Shrooms at the farm.  I don't actually harvest this guy, but more on that in another post.  (and yes, that is a dead plant, and it is dead for a reason!)

There are lots more, but for now, see how you go conserving your Energy.

See you round the Spiral,

Morgrim

Pets, Pets, Pets

Pets - frustrating, expensive, extremely time consuming...

...but oh so very valuable when you get them right!

As mentioned previously, I'm still trying to get the perfect Coldfire, and lately, it just hasn't been working for me.  My Penumbra (Miss Callie) is a great pet, but very selfish with her genes.  Other than a few hatches at first, I cannot seem to get another Coldfire to drop from my numerous attempts.

I have attempted to do some research here and some people claim that the order of hatching is important - but it isn't.  I have tried both Penumbra and Coldfire on the left, to no noticeable affect.  It is possible that the percentages change, but even about that I am not sure.

Now, my "Pet Graveyard" is completely out of control and I have been selling pets back to the Pet Shop Boys.

Well, after yet another Penumbra to add to the mix, I am off to Halfang.  I have a different strategy in mind...I'm going to get that Coldfire.  I know it isn't going to be easy, but it is going to be worth it!

Until next time - I might see you in Vestrilund!

See you 'round the Spiral!
