Rattlebones - The Exalted Dungeon...The 1st Time.

If you remember from my last post, you will have seen that I have 3 Rattlebones dungeons.  This gives us time to learn from our mistakes and to optimise these fights.  We don't tend to look for help when completing them, preferring to work things out for ourselves.  That said, it also means we can describe what happened for those of you who like to understand how these fights unfold.

BTW - This is not meant to be a "how-to" guide...more a "how-not-to" one!

We knew Rattlebones would hit with a big Mana Burn, and that a Feint would be turned on its owner.  We knew the Fairy Queen was in there and we would need a bunch of Ether Shields in order to survive (simplistic but essential advice).  Other than that, we didn't know a lot.

We decked ourselves out in (what we thought was) the appropriate gear.  I pulled on plenty of damage and critical bonus, with a good mix of universal defence.  While it wasn't the strongest gear I had, I wasn't sure what to expect, so the general resist to all seemed like a fair position to take.

Hmm...wow...were we wrong.

You have to remember, we haven't been around the Spiral quite as much lately, and we hadn't fought like a team in a while.  Let's just say...we were rusty!

The fight opened well with Blaze hitting early and me following suit to take out the minions.  Let's just say it was less successful than we had hoped and it wasn't long before Alia's healing was desperately needed!

Still, as fast as could get pips, the cheats kept us at bay, and before too long we were fleeing and returning and quickly as we could.  If you follow our blog, you'll know we *hate* fleeing, preferring to heal and keep the team together.

It didn't take long to realise the folly of that decision!

You can see in the bottom image the results of one of Rattlebones' new spells, putting a very effective (and impressive-looking) shield in place, and that Fairy Queen truly has bad taste if she reckons I'm not as charming and Rattlebones!  Still, jokes aside, stealing any charm that put up in the air get very frustrating when your enemy has 30,000 health and healing friends.

Then the new spells started making an appearance, as well as some extremely hard hitting natural attacks.  Don't be surprised if your whole team is taken out by one of these AoE spells.  They are vicious.

A couple of hours in, we had Rattlebones down to 15,000 health, and Blaze's friend Alia Night was wondering past.  She gave him a great tip (well, this isn't the actual tip, but made it made us think) - the Doom and Gloom can be stopped!

---- SPOILER ALERT----

If you want to beat this dungeon, it is equally important for you to use  Dispel spells as well as Ether Shields.  (hint: Balance and Storm).

Unfortunately or fortunately, we didn't ever get a chance to stop the Doom as we killed the old Rattler first.  It was interesting at this point.  The Fairy Queen kept up her spells and that of Rattlebones for a while, but after casting a Steal Charm, she stopping stealing my charms.

Once we realised that, it was a rollercoaster from there, with a BIG stop at the end - for the Fairy Queen.  Some people say "overkill", but I just say "kill" - the bigger the better.

So a 61.5K hit later, and the Fairy Queen, her minions and good old Rattlebones were once again sent packing.

Time to check out that chest!

Blaze did well with a Master's Socket Wrench, and I got another Ultra seed, so I was happy.  Alia got some boots, but the really didn't cut it, so she will need to wait until next time to get a good drop.

Well, now that we are done, there are 2 more Rattlebones dungeons that I have left to try.  Now that we know more about it we'll see how quickly we can get through next time.

So good luck when you meet Rattlebones yourself and...

See you 'round the Spiral!

Rattlebones Rank 7! Master Dungeon!

So I entered the commons today and found a young wizard asking around for help. No one else wanted to and I wasn't particularly busy so I decided to give him a hand.

I followed Cody back to his house and it turns out that he wanted help with his Rattlebones dungeon. So this was what he needed help with! After recently finishing the exalted version with Alia and Mogrim, I thought it would be good fun to revisit at a lower level.

Everything was going smoothly until a few minutes into the fight, he died. He only has Menu Chat so I was afraid about what to do. Thankfully however, Cody knows his stuff and fled the duel only to reappear a little later healthy and ready to fight.

I powered up as much as I could manage without storm dispels (Fairy Queen is annoying) and struck out with a fairly big deer knight that took out the fairy's and left Rattlebones unhealthy.

After a powered up Avenging Fossil took out Rattlebones, it was time to see what I got from the chest!

Sadly, the loot this time was mostly just housing items and snacks, however, for some reason I have a thing with wands and got a wand with.. Resistance! This is the first I've seen of something like this and it's an interesting concept! I won't be using it on my wizard personally but it's cool to have!

Thank you everyone very much for watching and I hope you enjoyed!

Until next time!

What?! The Tardis is Operational!!!

I realise this post is just a quick one, but the buzz going around with this new update is amazing.

Let's see, we have the Tardis.  It moved a few updates ago (for those with eagle eyes) and there was always a hint that something might be going on...

...and it seems that those suspicions were 100% right!

And let's face it, how good does it look?!?

The Tardis itself has relocated away from its normal resting place in Marleybone to be appearing all over the Spiral.

With multiple points of entry, this is a different approach that Kings Isle have taken, and I would guess that it is a direct result of the continually increasing number of new Wizards hearing about and loving the Wizard101 world(s).

When you first meet the Doc, he asks you to head to Olde Town...and there it is.  Amazing!

You can then get the next wonderful part of the this experience - craftable mounts!!! Pogo sticks, but these things look awesome!

There are new spells, like Cold Iron, and this is just amazing.  I'm going to stop typing now as I need to be playing this one :)

OMG!!  Travelling back in time...only to find my wonderful Fire Professor in the Ice school??

OK, I'm outta here - ENJOY!!

See you 'round the Spiral!

Mirror Lake Buddies

Hey Everyone!

As I mentioned in my last battle post, I am left with battles that need friends. The final one for Zafaria, means that Mirror Lake is one is want to finish so I can move on. Although I have really liked this world, and it has come to an end rather too quickly for my liking.

Back to Mirror Lake. I need friends, and probably four of us should do it.... hmmm who to ask?  Not that I had to think too hard about it.... I called on the help of my fellow blogging wizards, Morgrim, Alia and Blaze. It is a LONG time since we were all in a battle together so it made a nice change!

Actually, to be honest, being in a battle with 3 friends was a challenge... I had not been in a battle with 2 let alone 3 for ages. I kept putting my Death Blades on Morgrim. Completely useless to our resident Fire Wizard!

Morgrim asked if I wanted to hit fast and hard, or take it a bit slower. I was happy to just blast through this time.... I know it will not be the last time I take this dungeon on.

Morgrim, Blaze and Alia have set way of approaching battles.... Blaze provides the Blades, Alia keeps everyone's energy up, and Morgrim makes the damage hit. Choosing to go fast meant that I was a little redundant in this setup, but Curses, Feints and Dragon Blades were still of use.

After defeating Tse-Tse for the final time, we chat to Morganthe. In this dungeon Morganthe tries to tempt you over to the dark side. When you say no, she takes none too kindly to it, is full of threats as usual, then summons the Spectral Spirits in her usual show of power.

There is also a cheat in play using a 90% Tower Shield. Alia informed me that the Elephant Spirit will continue to place this annoying Shield while the other Spirits are alive. An all out assault was needed.

But there was another cheat in play too. After round 3 someone gets  marked with a STUN shield. You need a charm in place on the next round or it's time to suffer the consequences. My team were all over this cheat, so I didn't get to find out exactly what those consequences were - I'm quite happy with that outcome to be honest!

Morgrim got ready, had a stack full of Blades and played his hand - consistent hits except for Fire due to the Tower Shield. It took a second spell to defeat him, and thanks to Alia the spell was a stunner. That Elephant could not withstand the power of the enormous Gnome lol!!

Thanks to some bizarre words by Morganthe - "Ah'nahl Nathtak", "Uth Vas Bethad", "Do-Hiel Dienveh", a Tower has appeared and we are instructed to follow Morganthe.... back to the bottom of the Lake.

Next up are 4 Goliath Bruisers. They are all Ice I notice with some dismay. That was short lived though - Morgrim was here so Ice would not stand a chance! No cheats in this fight. We applied the same strategy, build up the Blades, Feints etc and let Morgrim take them out.

This battle leads to the Spiders. Two exchanges took place as we entered this area and saw our foe:
Tabitha - Yuck, Storm!
Alia - Yuck, Spiders!
They had an obscene amount of power pips at the start of the battle. This is more of a problem as I wonder through the Spiral, although I guess there is more gear for Power Pips out there.

These guys are Rank 11 bosses and have 6,470 Health each. Adopting the same strategy we settled in to give Morgrim the power behind his hit. Not getting them all in his hit, once again Alia comes to the rescue, with Morgrim providing the narrative!

I managed to catch a stunning shot of Alia as she cast the final spell in our dungeon. And what better way to finish? I love this spell, I think I have probably mentioned that before in an earlier post.

The dungeon didn't take long at all. I wonder how many of you have solo'ed it? I popped in there before asking my fellow bloggers just to see what the deal was. I had often seen Wizard's locations marked as Mirror Lake, and I know that it is one of the farming dungeons. I got as far as the 4 ice minions and pretty much quit at that point. I still have trepidation when faced with 4 ice enemies!!

Of course, Morganthe is not happy with the outcome of this dungeon. Risking 7 years bad luck she breaks Mirror Lake and it's all over.

We didn't get to battle her in this fight, though I am sure that day draws ever nearer. I know this is my final dungeon in this world. I am not sure if it is my favourite as I really liked Grizzleheim, although not the Ice parts so much (that blue hurt my eyes!).

The completion of Zafaria is a task I will take on myself, and then I will take the High Road to Avalon. I have 2 tapestries for Avalon, so have been over there a few times. Not sure how I will find questing there... but there is a spell I want badly over there!

Have fun, until next time!

Gift Card - Gauntlet Analysis - The Spiral Cup Gauntlet!

Wow, a new day and another Gauntlet.  It seems crazy but I was wondering when the next one would be released, if at all.

Gauntlets have always been a different kind of approach for KI, and when the Pagoda first came out everyone was racing out to get one.  Once the second one came out, it was game on - everyone in the Commons was asking the same question "Bane?" meaning - "Have you got the Winterbane Hall gauntlet and can I play it?" (I can understand how the abbreviation to "Bane" came about!!).

It was an awesome dungeon as Raven's Hoard goodies were being dropped - and then, of course, there was my favourite drop, the Coldfire Dragon!

Strangely, KI then brought out Castle Tours, and a very astute Swordroll asked the obvious question - if you can simply visit a castle and play a Gauntlet, will anyone buy them anymore?

It seems that KI had the same thought.  As a result, the new Spiral Cup Gauntlet has a handy trick that seems to have gotten around this little challenge.  If you want to use this Dungeon - the "Pigswick Fountain Dungeon" you actually have to be friends with the real owner!  No more Housing Tour shortcuts (unless you know the owner of the house that is...) - it looks like KI have solved that problem nicely.

So, is this Dungeon worth playing?

Well, yes, kind of.

The fights themselves are kind of fun.  These are a little tricky with a couple of cheats - in fact, Dualist101 has outlined these nicely HERE - this data is for Level 100, but the cheats are the key part.  For me, that does present a challenge worth the fight...but other than the fighting, what is there?

From a Reagents perspective, I always like Turquoise and that is a good drop, as is Fish Fins.

From a Seeds perspective, the best you can hope for is the DHE - Deadly Helephant Ears.  These are a commonly sought after seed as they drop Rank 8 Mega-Snacks giving between 25 and 30 points to various Pet Talents.  Always a good thing.

There are a bunch of Treasure Cards, and I'll leave it up to you as to your thoughts on these.

Then there is the Gear - something everyone is always keen to see.  Hmm...brace yourself.  The gear has no stats and an ...unusual... look to it.  I'm sure a lot of people will find this appealing, but I cannot see myself wearing them.  Oh, there is also the Greenwarden's Brilliant Boots, but that is the only item of note if you are keen on stats.

Finally, the Pets.  These are pretty cool.  The pick of the bunch, the Rude Goblin Pet, doesn't have the best stats, but has a great card.  For 5 pips you get a 450-530 Myth hit, but then he will also summon one of two minions!  Normal rules of minion use applies and if you have one on the field, it will be replaced.

OK, that is kind of it for the Dungeon, but what about the rest of the Gauntlet Gift Card?  As usual, you get some items with your $39 Card, and one of these is a real keeper.  The Tanglewood Vine mount.

This mount looks great.  It rolls and tears up the ground as you ride it.  The best thing is, if someone is riding one on a floor above you (say in a 2-storey house), you can see the vine moving through the ceiling!  It looks fantastic in the water, and is possibly the best part of the Card.

Then there is the Pegasus Pony.  I can see a number of people just loving the look of this one.  While its base stats aren't great, with Critical Block, Stun Resistance and MC Conviction, it certainly has some handy talents.

The Gear that you get with the card is OK, and there is a definite emphasis on Power Pip % and absolutely no Health at all!  This is certainly different, but I don't mind it.  In general, Wizard health has just kept going up, and I'm not so sure that it needs to.

The wand is different, and in a good way.  We finally have a wand that is a book...of sorts.  The way you carry and use it are a little different, but I think this is a good option for people to have.

So, the verdict.  Well, for me, it is line ball...would I spend the $39?  The 5,000 Crowns are always great, and the Gauntlet is pretty good, but I am not sure the Tanglewood Vine mount is worth buying the pack for, and that is the only thing I'd be after.  The Rude Goblin would be great, but I know I can probably hatch with someone to get it.

Then again, it is mid-year and perhaps this is one of those things that you can spoil yourself with.

...and that Vine mount does look amazing...

What do you think?  Am I being a little harsh?  Why would you buy the Spiral Cup Gauntlet?

See you 'round the Spiral (and if I'm on a Vine mount, I must have reconsidered and it was worth it after all :))

The Storm Caiman

I haven't quested for some time, and I was getting the itch to get back on the trail again.  I had been in the jungles of Azteca for some time, bashing small monkeys and spooky wraiths (and who doesn't love the snake bridge!)

Once I had defeated the last of them, and performed some skillful stone masonry on some ancient columns, it was off to take on the Storm Caiman.  Aha!  Into a dungeon!

First, I had to don the robes and appearance of one of those wraiths and drift into the pyramid.

The first few fights were pretty typical, although Agnes was a bit of a handful, she wasn't unusually difficult.  From there, a quick glance at the Codex and I knew something was wrong!  I hadn't gotten there in time! No!  She had already summoned the Storm Caiman!

It was up to me to stop him.

I raced into the next chamber and Blaze realised what was going on.  He told me that the Caiman was a crafty fellow and had defeated him when they initially met.  Hmm...I know how well Blaze can fight...those are words I need to heed.

A quick glance through my gear and I knew I had to do something.  I switched into my "I hate fighting Storm bosses" gear and I was ready.

"Arrrgghhhh!!" I charged into the fray ready to take out this evil spirit at all costs!

The battle was intense.  It started hard, with me going second.  A quick early Medusa from a minion and a Storm Owl from the boss and I was immediately on the back foot.  Thanks to Blaze's tips, it wasn't too bad, but the fight was definitely on!

I settled in, and in true Fire form, I nailed the pesky minions and it was time to take the Caiman down, but he certainly wasn't giving in without a fight.

Wow...all of a sudden I'm brimming with pips and extremely low on health.  Do I go for the killer hit, or do I heal?  Going second...well, let's just say, I'm glad I went with healing!

Fortunately, the lady of the tree worked her magic and got me back from 4 health to a point where I was ready to continue this battle to the death.

The struggle continued, with each of us scoring big hits, and then...no!  I was nearly dead again!  54 health!  Bugger!

Fortunately, my backflipping, hooved companion jumped in (literally!) to save the day.

Well, that was enough.  I was able to then finish the job and the world of Azteca breathed easier now that the threat had been neutralised (they just had to worry about a whopping big meteor instead lol!)

But you know?  Even once defeated, the Storm Caiman chose to be rude.  Look at this guy shouting...I don't think I have seen any other character speaking in all caps?  If I have missed one, let me know so I can go back and check it out.

Someone really should show him the CAPS LOCK key!

How did you go against this guy?  I know I appreciated Blaze's tip - just in time!

See you 'round the Spiral!

Trial of Spheres - going Solo!

Hey everyone,

After my recent lack of solo success with Hexfin, I felt I needed to redeem myself somewhat. So when the Trial of the Spheres appeared on my timeline, I subconsciously decided that this battle I would do alone.

I have to say of all the dungeons, this one is pretty good. There are a few 'tests' along the way, and you do have to put a little thought into them, and concentrate on the messages - as they tell you what you need to know! Once you have worked out how to align the moons to open the paths to each of the mini battles, you can literally blast your way to collecting the Lunar chests and the Shields within. Completing four of these will take you to the first of the bigger battles.

At the start I had no idea what I was letting myself in for, and a couple of times I gave up on the Astraeus battle. I'm sure quite a few of you have been there, when the 3 minions appear just one time too many and the battle has been going for an hour, and you really just don't seem to be getting where. I changed my deck around a few times before I found I had something that worked.
The minions are life, as you can see, so you really don't want them to hang around too long and giving life back to Astraeus. Beware, this is another battle where you can fall foul of the Tower Shield too
.

You'll find it is easy to get rid of the minions, with that 500 health, but you need to be smart with what you have left in your deck when they are gone. You'll get a few rounds when the dastardly Tower shield is missing and that's when you need to get in your best strikes. I found the best thing was to load up on power pips, have a Bone Dragon and Blades ready, and then strike. Timed well the first strike will hit with no shield and the extra damage for those 3 rounds makes the whole battle a lot easier.

Also, because I loaded up on Power Pips, it meant I could continue to play the big spells while the Bone Dragon worked it's magic. By the time the Tower Shield appeared and the minions were back, Astraeus had gone from 7,230 to 2,450 health. And then I did a similar thing again. I did encounter a 'slight annoyance' in that the last strike - 'my kill' strike - didn't quite work. When the deck was back for me to choose again I found he had 1 health. ONE!!! Seriously ?

One more spell and I was off to the Lunar Sanctum. Another series of tests to complete before the portal to the battle opens. These are a bit different, but once again the words tell you what you need to know.

Onto the next battle, and this time it is against Ptolemos. Only one minion with him, so you may be excused for believing this one to be easier. Word of warning.... it is not. For me it was a long battle. The first time I tried I literally ran out of cards and had to flee. I had right-clicked my 'Reshuffle' card right at the start, you see I never dreamt the battle would last as long as it did. Another prolific use of Tower Shields, but not the normal ones... no that would be far too easy! Ptolemos uses the 90% shields, rendering any spell useless when it is in play.

So this is another one where you need to be careful of timing, and the real trick is to use Blades. If you use a Blade he finds you 'Charming' and all the shields disappear. My tactic for this battle, was not to rush. Pass or Shield up when there was nothing useful in my deck. Power up any spells with Gargantuan or Monstrous, get Vengeance going, then Blade, then hit. It worked a dream! But it still took a while.
And I ran through my whole deck before I was eventually able to defeat him. As you can see, the Reshuffle is sitting there just in case. As it was the last few cards I had were awesome, so it was over, and onto the next one!

The Solar Sanctum.

I liked the look and feel of this place. You know Morgrim once said to me that Celestia was one of the most visually stunning parts of the whole Spiral.

And when I first saw the blue areas I thought WOW! But there were so many of then, the blue started to wear a bit thin, lost it's shine so to speak. The Solar Sanctum takes it right back up there. It does help that my favourite colour is yellow, so I am a little biased here :)
Again, there is a puzzle to solve before the portal opens to allow you to face Mithraya. It is not too difficult, take care when reading the words - they tell you what to do, in a round a bout way. You collect the sun chests in this one.

Mithraya is a bit different to the other bosses. I have heard others say the she is a favourite of theirs, and I can see why. Ablaze with flames, she does have a certain reverence about her.

I started this battle in completely the wrong way. I had been leaving one mana bottle in case I needed to fill up, and it just so happens that I did. Phew!, right? With just over 1700 health left, it was a far cry from my usual 3100. Unfortunately I was more concerned with checking my deck that I completely forgot. As soon as I entered the battle I realised my mistake - I sincerely hoped that it would not be my downfall!

And just like the other battles, this one is all about timing. When you see the phrase "The Cards Align! Now's Your Chance!" - you need to be ready. It may take you a couple of rounds to figure that out, but once you have that strategy this battle if fairly quick. It is by far the easiest of the 3 battles.
Try and take time to admire the graphics here. They are pretty awesome!

And it wasn't long until it was all over. Victory was mine, and with it a shiny new badge!

So I believe I have redeemed myself. Third time was a charm for me, although it took around 2 hours to complete end-to-end.  And with it came another bonus.... I am now level 70!

Cyrus Drake wants to have a chat, some sort of challenge. Looking forward to that, but for now I will take a certain amount of pride in the completion of this battle solo!

Until Next Time,
Tabitha.

Feb was Fantastic!

You know, it seems like only yesterday when we were welcoming in 2014, now, we are well into it with March kicking off and the year is simply flying past.

The ultimate Gear Guide in Wizard101Here at the Keep, it has been a big month.  The opening of February was the announcement of our secret project that we had been running for more than 6 months - the Manual of Mastery.  HERE and HERE).  With a few people now owning their own version of the software, it is starting to get people excited at that it can really do!
With that first post, followed by a little more of an explanation of how it worked, we ended up with the most comments we have had on any post!

It was a month when Pack-a-Palooza was back, we started our series on Grub Guardian, and Tabitha's Bazaar stalking started becoming a little bit creepy!   (only kidding of course Tab, we all do it!)

I had a rant at one stage about the joys(!) of being a Fire wizard. and even KingsIsle had some challenges on their hands with pets not casting Fairy!

Absolutely everyone (at high levels) has been waiting patiently - or not so patiently - on the Test Realm being opened again to see more of Khrysalis Part 2, and when it finally arrived, no update was forthcoming, although the updates with the Test Realm were very, very handy!  :)

During February, Tabitha got her first Mega Pet, Valentines Day came and went with some great, although sometimes a little confusing, specials in the Crowns shop and Tabitha also showed a hint of her competitive side, challenging Galen to a 'Buy Off' in the Bazaar on her quest for more Jade Chairs.

The Lost Pages event was back in the Spiral, and there was a little post in there to help people know what to do if their backpacks started filling up with gear they couldn't Sell.  I even ventured back into Wizard City to see if I could inspire some of the young magicians to taking their Wizards on, in the same way I was inspired all that time ago...

Interestingly, and what was very important for us, was the renewed focus in the Wizard101 Weekly.  This newsletter (free!) goes out each week chock full of useful Wizard101 facts etc.

The last big item of note is the introduction of a new Keep member this month. I am looking forward to his contribution and I hope it continues to be worthwhile for you, the reader.

So, that's it for February.  It was a big month!

As ever, feel free to leave some feedback on the kinds of things you would like to know more about, and we'll look to getting some Blogs up for you.

I don't know about you, but I am looking forward to March.  It should be a great month!

See you 'round the Spiral!

Storming through the Labyrinth

The Labyrinth.

Last time I entered, it was to get my new spell - which I love, love, love. Tonight I thought about trying out the dungeon itself. But I wasn't sure. So I stood there a while, then my storm friend appeared. Said she was happy to come in and help.... decision made.... off we went. She is level 90. I am level 50. Storm and Death.

It was obvious she had been to the Labyrinth many times before. I struggled to keep up with her and even had to port a couple of times. She knew where every battle was, every step we had to take.

And I can't complain. Storm really are awesome. The power of their hits... well it just makes my spells feel so insignificant. They do it quickly, and they hit big. With a good accuracy you really can't beat storm. Add to the mix a critical rating of 323, and job done. Her hits were big, and they just kept coming.

Storm spells are good value to look at too. So we whizzed around the dungeon. 2 hours? No more like 30 minutes!

I didn't get chance to read the story as we went around. But it's all good. I'll be doing it again. I have no doubt about that. And it will still feel pretty new, we blasted through that dungeon so fast I could barely take a breath.

As much as I missed actually following the dungeon, it really is awesome to watch the really high level wizards make it all look so easy.

I did Winterbane with Morgrim once. And that too was a heady mix of powering through the dungeon. Hit hard and Hit fast. A mix of critical on Genie and Meteor - they didn't stand a chance! It kind of makes my head spin. It all goes so quick that it becomes a blur of flashing spells followed by short sprints.

I have to say it is not as enjoyable to do it hard and fast. Not the first time. Good thing is that it was so fast that the next time I chose either of these dungeons, it will probably feel more like the first time. So it really is all good. And the experience gained my watching a level 88 - 90 wizard and the way they work is invaluable.

What do you think about doing the dungeons hard and fast? Do you like that, or would you rather find your own way through? Or both.... hit hard and then take it leisurely the next time.

As always, would love to hear from you!

Until next time,
Tabitha.
